IT Infrastructure, in a physical sense, consists of hardware and software - an interconnected mass of products which work together to provide for the IT needs of the organisation. As with all complex systems, it needs to be operated, maintained and refreshed such that IT delivers the maximum possible value to the business whilst working within budget constraints. Especially in recent times - the role of the IT Department is to achieve more for less. "Operations" is the term used to describe "how" the IT Infrastructure is managed for optimum results and it touches all systems at every level.
