Apple

Best known these days for iPOD, PADs and PHONES - Apple actually started producing desktop computers before the IBM PC came on the scene in 1981. The Apple I dates back to 1976.

Apple has built a reputation for innovation and stayed away from the Industry Standard approach of IBM's PC, keeping it's designs more proprietary in nature. In order to command the price premiums required to cover the costs of high levels of in-house R&D, Apple has managed to build a premium brand. By focussing on niche markets where design as well as function is important, Apple has built quite a following. For example in advertising, marketing and media creation markets.

The strategy for high innovation, designer form as well as function, coupled with an uncanny knack of predicting new consumer markets has brought Apple through some difficult times. And now, as software interoperability is increasing, the mainstream desktop and mobile computing markets now appear to be opening up to Apple as a viable alternative to the ubiquitous PC.

Desktop/ Laptop

Desktops
The first personal computers (PCs) were launched in 1981 by IBM. In designing the PC, the newly formed division within IBM decided to collaborate with an established chip manufacturer to help with the internal architecture called Intel. For the operating system, IBM turned to a virtually unheard of and very young company - called Microsoft.
