Hardware underpins every IT infrastructure and provides resources such as computing power, networking, data storage, user interaction devices, video and multi-media, displays etc. One of the characteristics of hardware is that it has a finite lifetime - it wears out or it becomes obsolete. A significant chunk of IT budgets goes into hardware because it constantly needs replacing. A common term used to describe this is "Tech Refresh" and it is a phenomenon which keeps the IT Industry alive. For IT departments, it justifies investment in newer technologies - often characterised by greater functionality and performance at the same or lower price.
