utility computing
Utility Computing was a widely used term before the days of Cloud Computing and described the idea of IT providing a service to the business which could be used "on-demand". The concept took the lead from common utility services such as gas and electricity. In common with these, the idea was that IT could provide computing resources in a metered way - meaning users pay for use - which could go up or down depending on needs.
